How to Use This English to Arabic Phonetic Typing Software

Note: Transliteration ≠ Translation

This tool performs transliteration — it changes the script from Roman to Arabic based on the sound (Franco-Arabic). Typing "shukran" will give you شكراً. It does not translate the meaning. For word-to-word translation, use our English to Arabic Translation tool →

  1. Click in the Editor: Click anywhere inside the text area above to activate the typing cursor. (The cursor will automatically start from the Right-to-Left).
  2. Type in Franco-Arabic: Spell out the Arabic words as they sound in English. You can also use numbers! For example, "mar7aba" becomes مرحبا, and "salam" becomes سلام.
  3. Press Spacebar: Upon pressing the spacebar, the best matching Arabic Unicode word will automatically replace your English text.
  4. View Suggestions: If the default conversion isn't what you meant, press the Backspace key once to reveal up to 5 alternative spellings.
  5. Voice Typing: Click the microphone button on the toolbar and speak clearly in Arabic for hands-free dictated typing.
  6. Export Your Work: Use the convenient buttons on the right side of the toolbar to export your text as a PDF or Word document.

Arabic Alphabet — Script Overview

The Arabic alphabet (أَبْجَدِيَّة عَرَبِيَّة) is written from right to left in a cursive style. It consists of 28 basic letters. Unlike English, Arabic letters change their shape depending on their position in a word (initial, medial, final, or isolated):

Basic Letters (حروف)

أ, ب, ت, ث, ج, ح, خ, د, ذ, ر, ز, س, ش, ص, ض, ط, ظ, ع, غ, ف, ق, ك, ل, م, ن, ه, و, ي

Harakat (تشكيل)

َ (Fatha), ِ (Kasra), ُ (Damma), ْ (Sukun), ّ (Shadda)

Arabic Numerals (أرقام)

English0123456789
Arabic (Eastern)٠١٢٣٤٥٦٧٨٩

Note: While the script is written Right-to-Left, numbers in Arabic text are actually read and written Left-to-Right.

Franco-Arabic Typing Chart — Keyboard Layout

Our intelligent phonetic engine translates your English and Franco keystrokes into Arabic automatically. Here is a basic mapping guide (3arabizi):

TypeArabicTypeArabicTypeArabic
a / aaا / آ2 / 'ء / أ / ؤbب
tتthثjج
7 / Hح5 / khخdد
z / dhذrرzز
sسshشS / 9ص
D / 9'ضT / 6طZ / 6'ظ
3عgh / 3'غfف
q / 8قkكlل
mمnنhه
w / o / uوy / i / eeي / ىah (end)ة

Pro tip: Numbers like 3, 7, 5 are natively supported by the phonetic engine to represent sounds that don't exist in English. For example, 'ع' is shaped like a reversed 3, hence '3' is used!

Tashkeel (Vowel Marks) & Shadda

Arabic is typically written without short vowels, but when you need them, the phonetic engine predicts the correct word and its diacritics based on common usage:

  • Shadda (ّ): To double a consonant sound, simply type the letter twice. For example, shiddahشدة, sallamسلّم.
  • Ta Marbuta (ة): Typically found at the end of feminine words. Simply end your word with an 'a' or 'ah'. For example, madrasaمدرسة.
  • Alif Maksura (ى): Often typed with an 'a' or 'y' at the end of words. For example, mustashfaمستشفى.
  • Hamza (ء, أ, إ, ؤ, ئ): Type '2' or an apostrophe '. The engine will place it on the correct seat. For example, mas2alaمسألة.

Phonetic (Yamli) vs Clavier Arabe (Mac/PC) — What's the Difference?

Phonetic / Franco (This Tool)

Perfect for bilingual users or those who have QWERTY keyboards without Arabic stickers. You type based on how the word sounds in English (e.g., "Mabrouk" -> مبروك). It's much faster to learn.

Clavier Arabe (Standard Layout)

The standard physical keyboard layout used in the Arab world. Every key maps to a specific Arabic letter (e.g., 'F' is 'ب'). It requires rote memorization and is very slow for beginners.
