How to Use This English to Telugu Phonetic Typing Software

Note: Transliteration ≠ Translation

This tool performs transliteration — it changes the script from Roman to Telugu based on the sound. Typing "nenu" will give you నేను. It does not translate the meaning. For word-to-word translation, use our English to Telugu Translation tool →

  1. Click in the Editor: Click anywhere inside the text area above to activate the typing cursor.
  2. Type in English: Spell out the Telugu words exactly as they sound in English. For example, "namaskaram" becomes నమస్కారం, and "telugu" becomes తెలుగు.
  3. Press Spacebar: Upon pressing the spacebar, the best matching Telugu Unicode word will automatically replace your English text.
  4. View Suggestions: If the default conversion isn't what you meant, press the Backspace key once to reveal up to 5 alternative spellings.
  5. Voice Typing: Click the microphone button on the toolbar and speak clearly in Telugu for hands-free dictated typing.
  6. Export Your Work: Use the convenient buttons on the right side of the toolbar to export your text as a PDF or Word document.

Gunintalu (Vowels) & Vattulu (Subscripts)

Telugu has specific rules for combining vowels and consonants. Our tool makes typing them incredibly simple:

  • Gunintalu (Vowel marks): Type the consonant followed by a vowel. For example, ka, kiకి, kooకూ.
  • Vattulu (Subscript Consonants): Type consonants sequentially without vowels between them. For example, kyaక్య, praప్ర, ammaఅమ్మ. No manual joining is needed.
  • Sunna / Anusvara (ం): Use n or m. For example, andamఅందం, shantiశాంతి.
  • Tricky Combinations: Type jnyanamజ్ఞానం, lakshmiలక్ష్మి, drushtiదృష్టి.

Unicode (Shruti) vs Legacy (Anu Script) — What's the Difference?

Unicode (This Tool)

The global digital standard. Text typed in Unicode (like Shruti or Noto) works perfectly on every phone, laptop, WhatsApp, Gmail, and Google Docs without needing font installation. It is the modern way to communicate in Telugu.

Anu Script / Apple Layout

These are older, legacy formats based on typewriter layouts. If you send an Anu Script document to someone who hasn't installed the font, they will only see English gibberish. It is strictly used for old DTP printing businesses.

Telugu Typing for APPSC, TSPSC & Government Exams

Cracking an Andhra Pradesh or Telangana government exam often requires passing a strict Telugu typing test. Here is what you need to know:

Exam Tip

APPSC and TSPSC mandate specific layouts like Inscript for typing tests. While our phonetic tool is excellent for building vocabulary and writing content, you must practice on a proper Inscript layout to pass the actual speed tests.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Type English phonetic words in the editor and press the Spacebar. The tool automatically fetches the best-matched Telugu Unicode word using the Google API. It uses the same underlying technology as Google Input Tools, without requiring you to install browser extensions.
No — it performs transliteration, not translation. It changes the script, not the meaning. Typing 'nenu' gives you 'నేను' based on the sound. For actual meaning translation, use our English to Telugu Translation tool.
For Vattulu, simply type the consonants consecutively. For example, for 'ma' vattu, type 'mma' (e.g., 'amma' -> అమ్మ). For 'ya' vattu, type 'kya' (క్య). The phonetic engine groups them properly.
Yes! Click the green mic icon in the toolbar and speak clearly in Telugu. It uses the Web Speech API to convert your speech to text. We highly recommend using the Google Chrome browser for voice typing.
You can find it right on this page in the "Phonetic to Telugu Typing Chart" section. It lists the phonetic mapping from English keystrokes to Telugu characters.
Yes. All your typed content is stored locally in your browser's internal storage. Nothing is ever uploaded to any TypingBits server. Your documents are 100% private.
This tool is a *phonetic* tool. It is excellent for vocabulary building and digital communication. However, AP/TS govt typing exams usually require you to type on the Telugu Inscript layout. Use this tool for general writing, but take speed tests on our layout-specific typing tutor.
Unicode is a modern global font standard that works natively on all digital devices (phones, web browsers, WhatsApp). Anu Script is a legacy non-Unicode font that requires manual installation on the computer, strictly used in legacy DTP and printing businesses.
