How to Use This English to Punjabi Phonetic Typing Software

Note: Transliteration ≠ Translation

This tool performs transliteration — it changes the script from Roman to Gurmukhi based on the sound. Typing "mera" will give you ਮੇਰਾ. It does not translate the meaning. For word-to-word translation, use our English to Punjabi Translation tool →

  1. Click in the Editor: Click anywhere inside the text area above to activate the typing cursor.
  2. Type in English: Spell out the Punjabi words exactly as they sound. For example, "sat sri akal" becomes ਸਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ, and "punjab" becomes ਪੰਜਾਬ.
  3. Press Spacebar: Upon pressing the spacebar, the best matching Gurmukhi word will automatically replace your English text.
  4. View Suggestions: If the default conversion isn't what you meant, press the Backspace key once to reveal up to 5 alternative spellings.
  5. Voice Typing: Click the microphone button on the toolbar and speak clearly in Punjabi for hands-free dictated typing.
  6. Export Your Work: Use the convenient buttons on the right side of the toolbar to export your text as a PDF or Word document.

Punjabi Typing Keyboard Chart — Phonetic Layout

Our intelligent phonetic engine translates your English keystrokes into Gurmukhi automatically. Here is a basic mapping guide for beginners:

Th / thਠ / ਥD / dਡ / ਦN / nਣ / ਨ

Pro tip: Case matters for retroflex vs. dental sounds! Use capital letters for hard sounds (Capital 'T' for ਟ, small 't' for ਤ, Capital 'R' for ੜ).

Laga Matra, Nasals & Pairin Akkhar (Foot Letters)

Gurmukhi has specific rules for nasal sounds and emphasized consonants. Our tool makes typing them incredibly simple:

  • Bindi (ਂ) & Tippi (ੰ): Used for nasal sounds. Simply use n or m. For example, punjabਪੰਜਾਬ, shantਸ਼ਾਂਤ.
  • Adhak (ੱ): Used to emphasize or double the consonant sound. Just type the consonant twice. For example, bacchaਬੱਚਾ, kuttaਕੁੱਤਾ.
  • Pairin Akkhar (Foot Letters): To place a letter at the foot (ਪੈਰ ਵਿਚ), type the consonants continuously. For example, praਪ੍ਰ, swaਸ੍ਵ, padhaaiਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ.
  • Vowels (Laga Matra): Vowels are attached automatically. e.g., kisanਕਿਸਾਨ, guruਗੁਰੂ.

Unicode (Raavi) vs Legacy (Asees / Joy) — What's the Difference?

Raavi Unicode (This Tool)

The global digital standard. Text typed in Raavi Unicode works perfectly on every phone, laptop, WhatsApp, Gmail, and Google Docs without needing font installation. The Punjab Government and PSSSB officially use the Raavi font standard.

Asees / Joy / AnmolLipi

These are older, legacy ANSI formats based on the typewriter layout. If you send an Asees document to someone who hasn't installed the font, they will only see English gibberish. It is outdated for web use.

Need to convert older legacy documents? Use our Asees to Unicode Converter →

Punjabi Typing for PSSSB & Punjab Government Exams

Cracking a Punjab government exam often requires passing a strict Punjabi typing test. Here is what you need to know:

Exam Tip

The Subordinate Services Selection Board, Punjab (PSSSB) strictly mandates the Raavi Unicode font with Inscript layout. While our phonetic tool is excellent for building vocabulary, you must practice on a proper Inscript layout to pass the actual 30 WPM speed test.

Exam / DepartmentRequired SpeedFont Mandate
PSSSB Clerk / Data Entry30 WPM (Punjabi)Raavi Unicode
Punjab Police Sub Inspector30 WPMRaavi Unicode
Punjab & Haryana High Court30 WPMRaavi / Asees (varies)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Type English phonetic words in the editor and press the Spacebar. The tool automatically fetches the best-matched Punjabi Unicode word using the Google API. It uses the same underlying technology as Google Input Tools, without requiring you to install browser extensions.
No — it performs transliteration, not translation. It changes the script, not the meaning. Typing 'kutta' gives you 'ਕੁੱਤਾ' based on the sound. For actual meaning translation, use our English to Punjabi Translation tool.
For Adhak (which doubles the consonant sound), simply type the English letter twice (e.g., 'baccha' -> ਬੱਚਾ). For Bindi/Tippi (nasal sounds), use 'n' or 'm' (e.g., 'shant' -> ਸ਼ਾਂਤ).
Yes! Click the green mic icon in the toolbar and speak clearly in Punjabi. It uses the Web Speech API to convert your speech to text. We highly recommend using the Google Chrome browser for voice typing.
You can find it right on this page in the "Punjabi Typing Keyboard Chart" section. It lists the phonetic mapping from English keystrokes to Gurmukhi characters.
Yes. All your typed content is stored locally in your browser's internal storage. Nothing is ever uploaded to any TypingBits server. Your documents are 100% private.
Yes and no. This tool outputs in pure Raavi Unicode, which is the correct font standard for PSSSB exams. However, this is a *phonetic* tool. Real PSSSB exams require you to type on the Raavi *Inscript* layout. Use this tool for vocabulary, but take speed tests on our layout-specific typing tutor.
Raavi is a modern Unicode font that works natively on all digital devices (phones, web browsers, WhatsApp). Asees is a legacy font that requires manual installation on the computer, otherwise, the text will appear as meaningless English characters.
