How to Use This English to Odia Phonetic Typing Software

Note: Transliteration ≠ Translation

This tool performs transliteration — it changes the script from Roman to Odia based on the sound. Typing "maitri" will give you ମୈତ୍ରୀ. It does not translate the meaning. For word-to-word translation, use our English to Odia Translation tool →

  1. Click in the Editor: Click anywhere inside the text area above to activate the typing cursor.
  2. Type in English: Spell out the Odia words exactly as they sound in English. For example, "odisa" becomes ଓଡ଼ିଶା, and "namaskar" becomes ନମସ୍କାର.
  3. Press Spacebar: Upon pressing the spacebar, the best matching Odia Unicode word will automatically replace your English text.
  4. View Suggestions: If the default conversion isn't what you meant, press the Backspace key once to reveal up to 5 alternative spellings.
  5. Voice Typing: Click the microphone button on the toolbar and speak clearly in Odia for hands-free dictated typing.
  6. Export Your Work: Use the convenient buttons on the right side of the toolbar to export your text as a PDF or Word document.

Odia Alphabet — Script Overview

Odia (formerly Oriya) is a classical Indo-Aryan language and the official language of Odisha. The Odia script developed from the Kalinga script. It is characterized by its curved, circular appearance. The alphabet consists of Vowels (ସ୍ୱର ବର୍ଣ୍ଣ) and Consonants (ବ୍ୟଞ୍ଜନ ବର୍ଣ୍ଣ):

Vowels (ସ୍ୱର ବର୍ଣ୍ଣ) — 11 Letters

ଅ, ଆ, ଇ, ଈ, ଉ, ଊ, ଋ, ଏ, ଐ, ଓ, ଔ

Consonants (ବ୍ୟଞ୍ଜନ ବର୍ଣ୍ଣ) — 35 Letters

କ, ଖ, ଗ, ଘ, ଙ, ଚ, ଛ, ଜ, ଝ, ଞ, ଟ, ଠ, ଡ, ଢ, ଣ, ତ, ଥ, ଦ, ଧ, ନ, ପ, ଫ, ବ, ଭ, ମ, ଯ, ର, ଲ, ଳ, ୱ, ଶ, ଷ, ସ, ହ, କ୍ଷ

Modifiers (ଅଯୋଗବାହ ବର୍ଣ୍ଣ)

ଂ (Anusvara), ଃ (Visarga), ଁ (Chandrabindu)

Note: Odia characters are curved because historically, writing on palm leaves with a stylus would tear the leaf if straight lines were drawn.

Matras & Juktakshara (Conjuncts)

Odia has specific rules for combining consonants and vowels. Our tool makes typing them incredibly simple:

  • Matras (Vowel marks): Type the consonant followed by a vowel. For example, ka, kiକି, kuକୁ.
  • Juktakshara (Conjunct Consonants): Type consonants sequentially without vowels between them. For example, kyaକ୍ୟ, praପ୍ର, ammaଆମ୍ମା. No manual joining (Halant) is needed.
  • Anusvara (ଂ) & Chandrabindu (ଁ): Use m or n, or type the exact sound. For example, sanskruitaସଂସ୍କୃତ, bainshiବଇଁଶୀ.
  • Tricky Combinations: Type jnaଜ୍ଞ, utkalaଉତ୍କଳ, shantiଶାନ୍ତି.

Unicode (Kalinga) vs Legacy (Akruti / Shree Lipi) — What's the Difference?

Unicode (This Tool)

The global digital standard. Text typed in Unicode (like Kalinga or Noto Sans Oriya) works perfectly on every phone, laptop, WhatsApp, Gmail, and Google Docs without needing font installation. It is the modern way to communicate in Odia.

Akruti / Shree Lipi

These are older, legacy formats based on typewriter layouts. If you send an Akruti document to someone who hasn't installed the exact font, they will only see English gibberish. They are strictly used for old DTP printing and government presses.

Need to convert older legacy documents? Use our Akruti to Unicode Converter →

Odia Typing for OPSC, OSSC & Government Exams

Cracking an Odisha government exam often requires passing a strict Odia typing test. Here is what you need to know:

Exam Tip

The Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC) and OSSC mandate specific layouts like Inscript or Akruti for typing tests. While our phonetic tool is excellent for building vocabulary and writing content, you must practice on a proper Inscript layout to pass the actual speed tests.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Type English phonetic words in the editor and press the Spacebar. The tool automatically fetches the best-matched Odia Unicode word using the Google API. It uses the same underlying technology as Google Input Tools, without requiring you to install browser extensions.
No — it performs transliteration, not translation. It changes the script, not the meaning. Typing 'odisa' gives you 'ଓଡ଼ିଶା' based on the sound. For actual meaning translation, use our English to Odia Translation tool.
Type exactly how you pronounce it, without adding vowels in between consonants. For example, typing 'swagat' gives 'ସ୍ୱାଗତ'. The phonetic transliteration engine handles conjuncts automatically.
Yes! Click the green mic icon in the toolbar and speak clearly in Odia. It uses the Web Speech API to convert your speech to text. We highly recommend using the Google Chrome browser for voice typing.
You can find it right on this page in the "Phonetic to Odia Typing Chart" section. It lists the phonetic mapping from English keystrokes to Odia characters.
Yes. All your typed content is stored locally in your browser's internal storage. Nothing is ever uploaded to any TypingBits server. Your documents are 100% private.
This tool is a *phonetic* tool. It is excellent for vocabulary building and digital communication. However, Odisha govt typing exams usually require you to type on the Odia Inscript or Akruti layout. Use this tool for general writing, but take speed tests on our layout-specific typing tutor.
Unicode is a modern global font standard that works natively on all digital devices (phones, web browsers, WhatsApp). Akruti and Shree Lipi are legacy fonts that require manual installation on the computer, strictly used in DTP and printing businesses.
