How to Use This English to Tamil Phonetic Typing Software

Note: Transliteration ≠ Translation

This tool performs transliteration — it changes the script from Roman to Tamil based on the sound (Tanglish). Typing "amma" will give you அம்மா. It does not translate the meaning. For word-to-word translation, use our English to Tamil Translation tool →

  1. Click in the Editor: Click anywhere inside the text area above to activate the typing cursor.
  2. Type in Tanglish: Spell out the Tamil words exactly as they sound in English. For example, "vanakkam" becomes வணக்கம், and "thamizh" becomes தமிழ்.
  3. Press Spacebar: Upon pressing the spacebar, the best matching Tamil Unicode word will automatically replace your English text.
  4. View Suggestions: If the default conversion isn't what you meant, press the Backspace key once to reveal up to 5 alternative spellings.
  5. Voice Typing: Click the microphone button on the toolbar and speak clearly in Tamil for hands-free dictated typing.
  6. Export Your Work: Use the convenient buttons on the right side of the toolbar to export your text as a PDF or Word document.

Tanglish to Tamil Typing Chart — Phonetic Layout

Our intelligent phonetic engine translates your Tanglish keystrokes into Tamil automatically. Here is a basic mapping guide for beginners:

e / eeஎ / ஏch / cச்njஞ்
i / iiஇ / ஈt / Tட்Nண்
o / ooஒ / ஓthத்n / ndhந் / ந்ந்

Pro tip: Case matters for certain letters! Use small 'l' for ல், capital 'L' for ள். Use 'zh' specifically for the classic Tamil ழ sound.

Uyirmei Eluthukkal & Special Modifiers

Tamil has specific rules for combining vowels and consonants (Uyirmei). Our tool makes typing them incredibly simple:

  • Pure Consonants (Pulli): Type the consonant block without an ending vowel. For example, mம், thத்.
  • Combined Vowels (Uyirmei): Type the consonant followed by a vowel. For example, ka, kiகி, kooகூ.
  • Aytam (ஆய்த எழுத்து): Used rarely but available by typing ak or aq. For example, ehkuஎஃகு.
  • Tricky Combinations: Type nandriநன்றி, kaadhalகாதல், palliபள்ளி.

Unicode (Latha) vs Legacy (Bamini / Vanavil) — What's the Difference?

Unicode (This Tool)

The global digital standard. Text typed in Unicode (like Latha or Noto) works perfectly on every phone, laptop, WhatsApp, Gmail, and Google Docs without needing font installation. It is the modern way to communicate in Tamil.

Bamini / Vanavil / TSCII

These are older, legacy ANSI formats based on the Tamil typewriter layout. If you send a Bamini document to someone who hasn't installed the font, they will only see English gibberish. It is strictly used for old DTP printing.

Tamil Typing for TNPSC & Government Exams

Cracking a Tamil Nadu government exam often requires passing a strict Tamil typing test. Here is what you need to know:

Exam Tip

The TNPSC (Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission) mandates specific layouts like the Tamil Typewriter layout or Tamil99. While our phonetic (Tanglish) tool is excellent for building vocabulary and writing content, you must practice on a proper Tamil99 or Typewriter layout to pass the actual speed tests.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Type English phonetic words (Tanglish) in the editor and press the Spacebar. The tool automatically fetches the best-matched Tamil Unicode word using the Google API. It uses the same underlying technology as Google Input Tools, without requiring you to install browser extensions.
No — it performs transliteration, not translation. It changes the script, not the meaning. Typing 'vanakkam' gives you 'வணக்கம்' based on the sound. For actual meaning translation, use our English to Tamil Translation tool.
For ழ, type 'zh' (e.g., 'thamizh' -> தமிழ்). For ள, use capital 'L' (e.g., 'uLLa' -> உள்ள). For ண, use capital 'N' (e.g., 'kaN' -> கண்).
Yes! Click the green mic icon in the toolbar and speak clearly in Tamil. It uses the Web Speech API to convert your speech to text. We highly recommend using the Google Chrome browser for voice typing.
You can find it right on this page in the "Tanglish to Tamil Typing Chart" section. It lists the phonetic mapping from English keystrokes to Tamil characters.
Yes. All your typed content is stored locally in your browser's internal storage. Nothing is ever uploaded to any TypingBits server. Your documents are 100% private.
This tool is a *phonetic* (Tanglish) tool. It is excellent for vocabulary building and digital communication. However, TNPSC typing exams usually require you to type on a traditional Tamil Typewriter or Tamil99 layout. Use this tool for general writing, but take speed tests on our layout-specific typing tutor.
Unicode is a modern global font standard that works natively on all digital devices (phones, web browsers, WhatsApp). Bamini is a legacy font that requires manual installation on the computer, strictly used in DTP and printing businesses.
