About the Phonetic System

Amharic uses an abugida writing system where each character represents a consonant-vowel combination. Since there are over 300 characters, they cannot all fit on a standard keyboard. This tool uses a smart phonetic transliteration engine.

How to Type in Amharic

• ➤ Consonants First: When you press a consonant key (e.g., k), the base 6th form (ክ) appears.
• ➤ Add Vowels to Form Syllables: If you type a vowel right after, the character morphs automatically! For example, typing k then a transforms it instantly into ካ.
• ➤ Common Vowels: e (1st form), u (2nd form), i (3rd form), a (4th form), E (5th form), o (7th form).
• ➤ Special Consonants: Use combinations like sh for ሽ, ch for ች, zh for ዥ, and ny for ኝ. Use uppercase letters for heavy consonants like T (ጥ), C (ጭ), P (ጵ).
